Snow is falling in Mammoth area, Upper Owens and Hot creek both having early midge hatches, midday BWO’s coming off and fish rising to them. Still finding lake run fish in certain holes on the Upper O.. As always you have to walk some water and make lots of casts to find them. Lower O flows are 124 cfs, easy to wade and lots of fun to fish right now. Indicator and tight line nymphing techniques (perdigons, hogan’s s&m, tungsten psycho, split cased bwo, etc..) are the most productive, but you can find some fish rising in the foam lines to midge clusters, and there are enough caddis around on warmer days elicit an aggressive surface strike. Mayflies hatch around 1 and can bring fish up for 1-2 hrs depending on the day and location on the river. Weather in Bishop is amazing most days, and the snowy mountainous backdrop is epic right now.
